schools of hogwarts

Harry Potter is one of the most successful literary series of all time—with approximate worldwide sales of the seven main series books surpassing the 500 million mark combined. The initial installment, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or Sorcerer’s Stone, depending on how much of a Harry Potter purist you are) has been surpassed in sales by only five other books, including Don Quixote, A Tale of Two Cities and the Bible. Ever since Harry Potter first embarked on his journey in 1991 by leaving The Cupboard under the Stairs, 4, Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey—which was located in the Dursley’s upstanding, neat, square executive house (built for upstanding, neat, square executive people, of course), we at OnlineCollegePlan.com have been big fans of The Boy Who Lived, The Hogwarts Houses, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and their struggle against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Because we understand that choosing the perfect school with an online program that is of a very high-caliber often paralyzes many people with fear, feeling much like someone has cast Petrificus Totalus on them, we are casting our own Finite Incantatem in this ranking, alleviating your fears. In addition to ranking these 60 schools based on a set of relevant and impactful ranking criteria, we have also sorted them into the four Hogwarts Houses (15 schools for each Hogwarts House; Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin) based on their school mottos and how closely those mottos are in line with the core principles and personal characteristics that the founders of each House valued and exemplified above all others. We have cast Lumos Maxima and examined each of these 60 schools to help you choose a school that will help you to become successful in life by shining our wand light on the following school’s strengths as providers of higher education.

Methodology:

We have ranked each of these schools which offer online degree programs based on the following criteria to determine where they were ranked within their respective Hogwarts House block:

  • 50% Freshmen Retention Rate;
  • 50% Graduation Rate;

We have chosen to rank the schools based on this criteria because it provides concise information on which schools are best able to keep their students engaged with the use of experiential learning or other high-impact educational practices. It also provides us with the information on which schools are best able to equip their enrolled students with the necessary skills and knowledge that they will need to succeed both in their academic and their professional careers. The final scores for the schools are based on their individual freshmen retention rate added together with their graduation rate, up to a maximum score of 200 final rating points.

In addition to the above ranking criteria, we have separated the schools into four blocks of fifteen schools based on each school’s motto. The schools were placed into a specific ranking block due to how similarly we felt that their motto epitomized the values of one of the four Hogwarts Houses. Schools only compete for a rank position against other schools that are within the same Hogwarts House block.

To rank the following 60 schools within their respective Hogwarts House block, we utilized each of the school’s websites to find information on their freshmen retention rates and their graduation rates. In the instances that we were unable to find this information directly from the school’s site, we utilized U.S. News and World Report‘s database of school information to determine what each of the school’s freshmen retention rates and graduation rates are.

Finally, after sorting and ranking all 60 of the schools, we then added together the final ratings for each school that are listed within a specific Hogwarts House block, and the House that had the highest combined total rates from its 15 school members was awarded the Hogwarts House Cup at the end of this ranking; in addition to the winning house being able to take pride in being awarded the House Cup, the top-ranked school from the winning house also received an additional shout-out for scoring the most points for their House.

—Professor Godric Gryffindor

The House of Gryffindor, which was created by one of the four founders of Hogwarts (the other three being Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin), Godric Gryffindor, is home to students that have the qualities that Gryffindor praised above all others: courage, determination, and just strength of heart. Students who get sorted into Gryffindor by the Sorting Hat—which incidentally started out as Gryffindor’s very own hat—are renowned for their commitment to protecting others and in having a moral obligation to do what’s right.

While there are some bad apples in Slytherin, the same applies to every other group of people. The average individual in Slytherin is just someone that exemplifies the personal characteristics that were so important to its founder; being cunning, being achievement-oriented, having a certain shrewdness about them and possessing the skills needed to be robust and efficient leaders. These traits go a long way in helping the members of Slytherin House to become individuals that are not only successful in their educational careers but in their professional careers as well.

And, assuming what your heart desired was to find a top-notch school which offers exceptional online degree programs, we hope that we have accomplished our goal of acting as a substitute Mirror of Erised when we cast Lumos Maxima at the top of this ranking and used our wand’s light to show off the strengths of each of the 60 schools, and particularly the strengths of Hufflepuff House extraordinaire; the University of Pennsylvania, a school that absolutely deserves your considerations for a school to attend. We hope you found this ranking to be both enjoyable and informative. Thank you for reading, and now that our work here is done:
